Der Träumer - Reaching Out (Title Track)

Swiss sound designer and film score composer Peter Philippe Weiss is Der Träumer. He was never comfortable in remaining in certain genres and styles. That's why he is still dancing between genres, sounds, rhythms, and noises—fascinated by the imaginative power of sound. As a film score composer and sound designer he gained experience in different fields of sound. He realized spatial sound 3D-sculputres for museums and exhibitions, and he composed film scores—up to cinema movies like “Manipulation”, played four music instruments (keyboards, bass, violin, guitar, drums) in different bands like “Duure Duure”, “Bi-Kids” and “The Look People” (keys) touring through Europe, playing at St. Gallen open air, CBCB’s NY, Diamonds Toronto. 1993 he published “Subway” (re-released 2021 by Bongo Joe Records) and 2001 “Zen jazz” a contemplative ambient album. From 2005 and 2009 he realizes spatial art sound installations in public spaces. And as a big fan of comics, fantasy and science fiction, he was looking for a way to transform these genres and put them into a musical form.

2014 he started with his new music project “Der Träumer” (the dreamer) after being researching and experimenting on this form for 30 years—like an alchemist! Now “Der Träumer” undertakes musical adventure voyages into dreamworlds. Strongly lead by his vision to bring people back to their own boundless fantasy! To their own, self invented fascinating pictures and dreamworlds. He translates dream visions into beautiful, dramatic and mysterious music and spoken poetry. Combining genres and cinematic sound worlds in an unconventional way: electronic, sound design, noise, art pop, funk, experimental, jazz, classic and more.

We had a submission on Groovers by Der Träumer. The track had a fervent fusion of electronic music, mystery, poetry, and beauty. The track name is “Reaching Out” from the album “Ghosts” which is released on 25th May and is available on all streaming platforms.

We had a chance to have an interview with him, so here it all goes!

— What was the story behind your stage name?

He replied- “The story behind my artist name Der Träumer (the dreamer) began in 2014 when I came across the ‘butterfly dream’—a 2300 years old Chinese story from poet Zhuangzi.

“Once Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn’t know he was Zhuang Zhou. Suddenly he woke up, and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuang Zhou. But he didn’t know if he were Zhuang Zhou who had dreamed he was a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuang Zhou.”

This story hit me like a lightning.

It was the hour of birth of my art project and my artist name DER TRÄUMER. (the dreamer)

With DER TRÄUMER I have found the playground and the vessel in which I can pour my musical dreams and visions. As DER TRÄUMER I am now undertaking adventurous expeditions into mysterious and visionary dream worlds. I experience fantastic adventures—from the darkest nightmare to the brightest light dream—and then translate these adventures into musical and sonic form.

Der Träumer is the perfect name! Because I experienced by myself that hearing is strongly connected with dreaming. If I'm hearing music or sounds with a high attention, I can come into a dream-state in the quality of a real dream in deep sleep. It gets real! Total immersion! Reality shifts! Even with multi-sensual experiences like smelling and touching…

Whoa!! Such a rooted and captivating backstory!

So, the next question was,

— How did came up with this album, and what was the thought process for it?

He replied- “3 years ago I wanted to release an album that represents my work. Through these 3 years I worked on that album—track by track—and the music came to a next level with new electronic and EDM as well as experimental elements and a very reduced spoken poetry to the music

And yes, it certainly reflects the prodigious work of yours!

Moving to next,

— What first got you into music?

He replied- “Playing piano as a 5-6 year old boy—improvising days and weeks. Then, later learning violin, guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards…

Like one said ~Everyone has talent. What's rare is the courage to follow it to the dark places where it leads~

Our next question is,

— Which artist inspires you the most and why?

He replied- “

— Pink Floyd: their understanding of music, sound quality and noise-atmospheres

— Prince: his whole artistic work! Funk pure, groove, spectacle, style, ideas

— Kate Bush: She was my teacher in inventing wonderful and unexpected melodies and great sounding productions. A genius!

— Björk: outstanding voice and outstanding sounds and arrangements, musicality pure

— Laurie Anderson: her work with spoken words in music, her spirit

— Future Sounds Of London: crazy sound collages and arrangements

— Massive Attack: The sound, the mixes, the harmonization

Such a fabled and legendary artist and inspiring for most of us.

Our last question is,

— Any final words for our reader and people listening to your music?

He replied- “Close your eyes and see!… The album GHOSTS is a voyage through your own imagination. Make yourself comfortable and put on your best headphones. Enjoy that journey full of surprises

From here, we end our interview with Der Träumer, “Reaching Out” from the album “Ghosts” is already on fire on all streaming platforms. If you guys like electronic and trap rhythms, gigantic cinematic sound spaces and quiet poetic reflections, then we promise you won't be disappointed.
